Qui Tam Section: [VIRTUAL] Anatomy of a Mortgage Fraud

May 15 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

**Program hosted in (ET) time zone**

Mortgage fraud continues to be an area ripe for qui tams, and this seems likely to be the case in the future. The panel will include attorneys from the Department of Justice’s Commercial Litigation, Fraud Section; an attorney who represents relators; and an attorney who defends False Claims Act cases. A Special Agent in Charge with the Department of Housing & Urban Development’s Office of Inspector General will also be on the panel. The session will be moderated by Assistant U.S. Attorney Cindi Woolery, who is the Affirmative Civil Enforcement Coordinator in the Western District of Missouri. The panelists will discuss topics such as mortgage fraud basics; HUD programs; investigation tasks; causes of action; the types of cases that have arisen over the last several years and how they have been resolved; how damages may be calculated; and litigation strategies such as discovery, motion practice, and the use of expert witnesses.
