On June 4, 2026, members of the San Diego legal community gathered for an intimate Chambers Conversation with the Honorable Linda Lopez, United States District Judge for the Southern District of California. The Federal Bar Association of San Diego welcomed attendees and set the tone for a thoughtful discussion about Judge Lopez’s career path, public service, and professionalism in the federal legal community.
Judge Lopez graciously opened her chambers to attorneys and law students with warmth and hospitality. From snacks thoughtfully placed on the table to family photographs displayed throughout her chambers, the setting reflected the welcoming spirit she brought to the conversation. She appeared genuinely happy to host attendees interested in learning more about her journey, her work, and the federal court system. During the conversation, Judge Lopez candidly answered questions about the experiences that shaped her career. She shared that she has been involved in the legal field since she was a teenager, making the law not only her profession, but the world she has known for much of her life. Her path included balancing full-time work with full-time school while maintaining academic honors, serving as an inspiring reminder that a legal career is built through persistence, discipline, and resilience.
Judge Lopez also offered practical advice to attorneys and law students. She encouraged attendees to be intentional about their involvement in the legal community by meaningfully participating in two or three organizations, rather than joining many without active engagement. She also emphasized the importance of civility, encouraging counsel to treat one another with respect and not take anything too personally. The event concluded with Judge Lopez taking time to speak individually with attendees.
The San Diego Chapter of the FBA thanks Judge Lopez and her chambers staff for sharing their time with us. Special thanks, also, to the Chapter’s VP of Professional Advancement, Rachel Eaton, for organizing the event.
