On September 16, 2025, over two hundred attendees came to learn from the local federal bench during the Twenty-First Annual Judith N. Keep Federal Civil Practice Seminar. During an event that was standing room only, practitioners packed into the Westin Gaslamp ballroom to receive advice on efficiency at all stages and levels of federal litigation. The San Diego FBA was honored to co-host the event with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California.

The event was opened by San Diego FBA President Kim Gregg, who welcomed the Honorable Anthony J. Battaglia to present the keynote address. Judge Battaglia highlighted the history of the Southern District of California, and especially the contributions of the seminar's namesake, Judge Judith N. Keep.

During the first panel, Judges Allison H. Goddard, David D. Leshner, and Steve B. Chu shared their insights on Efficiency in Discovery. In addition to highlighting the new mandatory Rule 26(f) conference checklist, the judges shared thoughts on how generative AI might impact what evidence is being sought in a case, as well as how to use AI ethically to assist in discovery.

Next, Chief Judge Cynthia A. Bashant and Judges Janis L. Sammartino and Benjamin J. Cheeks discussed Efficiency in Motion Practice. The judges emphasized the importance of addressing small issues early on through the meet and confer process rather than filing motions; making clear what relief is being sought from a motion; and being sure to follow local and chambers rules.

Litigators then received advice on Efficiency in Trial Practice from Judges William Q. Hayes, Linda Lopez, and Andrew G. Schopler. In addition to sharing examples of effective advocacy, the judges emphasized respecting jurors' time by being prepared and keeping arguments engaging.

Finally, Judges M. Margaret McKeown and John B. Owens discussed Efficiency in Appellate Practice by providing guidance for those new to appellate practice on how to keep briefs focused, organized, and concise. The Judges also provided tips on oral argument and updates on the workings of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Following the panels, participants were invited to stay and mingle over appetizers and drinks, and raffle winners received tickets to other upcoming FBA events.
