President Mary Cile will lead our Board of Directors in 2023. She is a judicial law clerk in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California and served our Chapter in both El Centro and San Diego. In an opening message, Mary Cile highlights the 2023 Board's vision: forming authentic connections with our members.

The San Diego FBA is delighted to partner with the San Diego Natural History Museum for a special Nat Talk featuring Ninth Circuit Judge M. Margaret McKeown. Judge McKeown will discuss her new book, Citizen Justice: The Environmental Legacy of William O. Douglas Public Advocate and Conservation Champion.
Douglas left an enduring legacy in the environmental movement, and Judge McKeown will explore the politics and ethics of his advocacy work and his enduring legacy at the event. Citizen Justice will be available for purchase (while supplies last), and Judge McKeown will sign books in the Museum store following her talk.

The San Diego FBA is co-sponsoring the San Diego Law Library's noon-hour virtual MCLE on "Expert Witnesses in Federal Court: The Do's & Don'ts." The panel will discuss how the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure apply to expert witnesses and will provide tips on how best to work with your experts including expert designations, reports, depositions, and trial testimony.
Speakers include Paul Starita of Gomez Trial Attorneys, Brett Norris of Fox Law, and Katie Parker, Chief of the Civil Division of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of California. The San Diego FBA's Immediate Past-President, Dylan M. Aste, will moderate the panel.

Community & National Updates:
On December 30, 2022, the amendments to Civil Local Rule 7.1 came into effect. The amendments relate to the time for hearing and schedule filing papers in social security cases.
Each year, the Federal Bar Association invites middle and high school students to address current topics in civics. Scholarships are awarded for first, second, and third place in two divisions for grades 6-8 and grades 9-12. Entries are due on February 9, 2023.
