Shireen Matthews received the Distinguished Service Award in recognition of her many years of service to the San Diego legal community. She served as President of the San Diego FBA from 2010 to 2011, a Board of Directors Member from 2006 to 2012, and an Advisory Board Member from 2012 to 2015. Ms. Matthews also spearheaded the creation of multiple programs aimed at improving legal practice in San Diego, including the annual Introduction to Federal Court seminar and the Supreme Court Case Review featuring Dean Erwin Chemerinsky.

For the past twelve years, Ryan W. Stitt has served as a Trial Attorney with Federal Defenders of San Diego, Inc. As part of his focus on systemic litigation, Mr. Stitt played a role in two significant decisions involving civil immigration arrests at the Southern District's courthouses and expanding eligibility for the statutory "safety valve" that allows a court to sentence a defendant below the mandatory minimum for certain drug offenses. Mr. Stitt's exceptional advocacy secured him this year's Outstanding Advocate Award.

Rising Attorney Award winner Tarina Mand is a fourth-year attorney at Dixon Diab & Chambers, where her practice focuses on class actions, mass tort cases, and employment matters. She is also a leader in the legal community who devotes her time to a variety of organizations, including the National FBA, Lawyers Club, and the South Asian Bar Association of San Diego. Not least of all, she volunteers her time to advocate for refugees and asylees.
