Trivia: Which Southern District airfield is the winter home of the

Judicial Update:


On March 7, 2023, the U.S. Senate confirmed U.S. Magistrate Judge Andrew G. Schopler as a U.S. district judge for the Southern District of California. Judge Schopler fills the seat formerly held by Judge Larry Alan Burns, who took senior status in January 2021. Read more about Judge Schopler here.

Our popular Courtroom Conversation series is back with U.S. Magistrate Judge David D. Leshner. As always, attendees will have the opportunity to network and connect with Judge Leshner and colleagues during the first 20 minutes of the program. During the remaining 40 minutes, Judge Leshner will discuss his path to the federal bench and practice pointers for civil and criminal practitioners. RSVP today.

Speaking of our Chapter Awards, we have extended the deadline to nominate Chapter members for our three awards: (1) the Outstanding Advocate Award; (2) the Distinguished Service Award; and (3) the Rising Attorney Award. The Ninth Circuit has extended the submission deadline for high school students in San Diego and Imperial Counties to submit an essay and/or video to address this year's prompt: The 28th Amendment - What Should Our Next Constitutional Amendment Be? Submissions are now due on March 20, 2023. For more information, including Contest Rules, visit the Southern District of California's Community Outreach page.

 

The Competition is named after Judge Baker Motley, the first African American woman appointed to the U.S. federal judiciary and the first woman judge in the Southern District of New York. She was a key leader of the African American civil rights movement, a lawyer, judge, state senator, and Borough President of Manhattan, New York City.

The Competition is open to all law students and young federal practitioners and professionals, and submissions are due by May 12, 2023. Read more about the Competition here.
