The conference featured a video titled History of Diversity in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of California, two panels with distinguished speakers, and a keynote address from Professor Bertrall Ross. At the reception following the conference, Chapter President Rebecca Church presented our inaugural Chapter Awards. Morgan Suder received the Distinguished Service Award, and Hannah Brown received the Rising Attorney Award. Congratulations to Hannah and Morgan on their achievements.

Bumatay was confirmed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit after serving as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California and as counselor to the U.S. Attorney General. During the Brown Bag Luncheon, Judge Bumatay will discuss practice pointers for civil and criminal cases and his path to the federal bench.

The San Diego Chapter and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California are pleased to present the Seventeenth Annual Judith N. Keep Federal Practice Seminar. The annual seminar is dedicated to the memory of District Judge Judith N. Keep, who served in the Southern District for over twenty years and as the District's first female Chief Judge.
This year's seminar will focus on pretrial and trial practice, including making a record for appeal. The program will include four panels featuring Ninth Circuit Judge John B. Owens, Chief District Judge Dana M. Sabraw, six additional District Judges, and four Magistrate Judges.

Southern District Update:
The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California is accepting applications for admission to the Criminal Justice Act (CJA) Criminal Defense and Material Witness Defense Panels for the term commencing on December 1, 2021, and expiring on November 30, 2023. Applications must be submitted no later than 4:00 p.m. on October 18, 2021.
FBA, National Updates:
The FBA announced the election results for its FY2022 national officers, including that former San Diego Chapter President Michelle M. Pettit will serve as one of four nationwide Directors. The Chapter congratulates Ms. Pettit on her position and looks forward to working with her at the national level.
The FBA shares updates on judicial vacancies and nominations, legislative proposals to allow cameras into federal courtrooms, and the Presidential Commission on the U.S. Supreme Court.
